VIII.

I was aware, as I led the way up the narrow stairs to the loft, that it was the first time I had shown Jenn my room. My heart was pounding with anticipation, and at the same time, I felt strangely awkward. The loft was open to the living room on one side, with only a railing dividing it from the rest of the house. I stepped aside to let Jenn up onto the landing, hoping she wouldn't feel too uncomfortable with the open airiness of the room.

The ceiling and walls were of whitewashed pine board, the ceiling slanting from a height of perhaps ten feet at the railing to five feet at the outside wall. The sliding door out to the balcony was inset in its own gable. Besides the double bed, there was a large dresser, a rocking chair, a three-shelf bookcase and a small writing table.

I gestured to all this with a grand sweep of my arm. "This is it. The guest room, my parents always called it."

"It's absolutely fabulous," Jenn gasped, walking a few steps forward. "I never knew this house had a balcony. You can't see it from the beach."

"No," I agreed. "It's set into the slope of the roof too well. It's a very private place; I used to spend a lot of time out there."

"I like it." She turned and held out her hands for me to take. I did, and she led me to the outside doors. "I want to kiss you out there, under the sun. May I?"

I shrugged. "I suppose. No one can see us." I unlocked the door and pushed it open, letting in the sound of the sea and the smell of the hot sand. We walked out onto the balcony and stood just shy of the railing, looking out over the water.

"I'll bet the sunrise is dazzling from here."

"Yes." I stepped to her and slid my arm around her waist. She turned into the embrace, lifting her hands to my shoulders.

We kissed, softly, tenderly, almost a chaste kiss. The next one was anything but innocent. It took my breath away, her mouth on mine, her tongue teasingly running along my lips, flicking at mine, dipping into my warmth. I felt weak in the knees, and tightened my arms around her to keep my balance.

Finally, I pulled my lips from hers and took her face in my hands, moving across it with tiny kisses. I smelled her musk, her shampoo, all of her, and wanted all of her. She dropped her head back as I reached her neck, growling deep within her throat at the myriad of tender nibbles I took on her skin.

Her hands moved up my sides, caressing the curve of my ribcage, the softness of my breasts, and then pulled me against her tightly, so that the top of her bosom was pressed against the fluttering pulse of my neck. I could hear her heart beating in her chest.

"Let's go in," she murmured. "Now." I led her back inside, closing the door with my foot.
